ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK) OVERVIEW
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the stomach area. It will also tighten weakened and loose abdominal muscles to give the stomach a flatter, firmer appearance
A tummy tuck is the most commonly requested of all cosmetic surgeries after childbirth or significant weight loss. After childbirth the abdomen undergoes the most dramatic change of all, swelling and stretching far beyond normal to accommodate your growing baby. While you may find that you can lose weight off your stomach fairly quickly after pregnancy, sagging skin and loss of tone are common issues, as well as stretchmarks.
Abdominoplasty is also performed after massive weight loss following gastric bypass, gastric bands, or other weight loss programs. The midsection is often left with copious amounts of skin, stretch marks, and weak rectus muscles. Furthermore, the stretch of the abdominal muscles never return to their original tightness even with intense exercise. In some cases, belly button hernias develop and deform it. Tummy tuck surgery focuses on removing the pannus or excess skin or apron that hangs over the waistline, tightening the underlying abdominal or rectus muscles. After being pulled tight and removing excess skin you will find that your abdomen looks much flatter and smoother with a more defined shape. Your entire midsection can be carefully sculpted allowing you to fit into your favorite clothes again.
How is a Tummy Tuck performed?
During the procedure, an incision is made in the lower abdominal region, allowing the surgeon to access and repair the muscles that comprise the abdominal wall and remove excess fat, tissue, and skin. Depending on the individual patient, a second, higher incision may be made near the navel to excise fat and skin in the upper portion of the stomach. Liposuction may be utilized to remove excess fat during a tummy tuck.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Considerations
During the consultation, you will be asked about the desired results you are looking to achieve. If you plan to get pregnant or lose weight, discuss this with your surgeon. Abdominoplasty is designed primarily for patients who are mostly satisfied with their weight, but who have excess skin and loose muscle around their midsections. The following conditions could indicate that a tummy tuck is right for you:
- Have experienced significant weight loss and/or childbirth
- Loose and sagging skin
- Weak or stretched rectus/abdominal muscles
- A protruding tummy
- Stretch marks
