Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. This procedure may be done alone or at the same time as another procedure, such as a brow lift, face-lift or laser skin resurfacing.
Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, a blepharoplasty can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes creating a more youthful look.
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds over the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
- Fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids, bags under the eyes
- Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
When applicable, Dr. Albert utilizes a CO2 laser for blepharoplasty. The CO2 laser replaces the scalpel used in traditional blepharoplasty procedures. With laser blepharoplasty, Dr. Albert removes excess sagging skin, repositions fat, and tightens loose levator muscles as needed. The procedure rejuvenates the eyelids and can also resurface and tighten under eye wrinkling. Blepharoplasty takes a decade or more off the age of your face.
Before and After Photos
Laser eyelid surgery has numerous advantages over traditional eyelid surgery:
- Minimized bleeding — As the laser energy vaporizes tissue it instantly closes off small blood vessels. This makes for reduced bleeding. This makes for faster, simpler procedures.
- Better visuals — The reduced amount of bleeding also makes it easier for Dr. Albert to see the area clearly. This improves access to the tissue needing to be removed. It improves precision.
- Reduced risk of scarring — Areas that are touched by the CO2 laser beam heal with less wound contraction and scarring due to the reduced amount of myofibroblasts formed at the surgical site.
- Less swelling and discomfort — The CO2 laser energy seals lymphatics, which results in less post-operative swelling and discomfort.
- Faster recovery time — Reduced trauma, minimized bleeding, less pain and swelling lead to faster, easier recoveries.
There isn’t any difference between good candidates for either traditional or laser blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures equally popular with women and men since the way our eyes age shows no preference by sex. Obviously, people who have spent more time outdoors, squinting and dealing with the sun’s UV radiation, will have more aging around their eyes than others. That would basically mean everyone in sunny Boca Raton! Smokers also have more aging around their eyes. Other people have a genetic predisposition to forming under eye bags.
The reality of blepharoplasty is this — most people over the age of 40 would benefit from this surgery.
Laser Blepharoplasty vs Traditional Blepharoplasty
These procedures are identical. The difference in laser eyelid surgery is that Dr. Albert uses the CO2 laser as the cutting tool, in lieu of a scalpel. The laser energy works to immediately cauterize blood vessels in order to stop bleeding. This means patients only have a very small amount of bleeding, as the vessels are instantly sealed before blood can pool.
As mentioned above, this makes for various benefits for the patient: reduced risk of scarring, less bleeding, less swelling and discomfort, and faster recovery times.
The goal of blepharoplasty is to tighten the skin and lessen or remove puffiness and sagging. Dr. Albert seeks to create a natural eyelid rejuvenation, rather than a “surgically enhanced” look. The precision of the CO2 laser allows him to remove a precise amount of tissue. Patients can opt to have eyelid surgery on upper or lower or both eyelids.
In the upper eyelid, the laser incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid, concealing it effectively. Excess skin is removed, fat repositioned or removed, and the underlying muscle tissue tightened.
In the lower eyelid, Dr. Albert tightens and shrinks the loose eyelid muscle and septum through the transconjunctival laser incision. This is made inside the eyelid. This precludes the need for an external incision.
In eyelid surgery, management of fat in the area is important for a natural-looking result. Dr. Albert usually leaves most of the fat, opting to simply reposition it to maintain a natural look. This avoids the hollowed out appearance that some patients develop from other surgeons who remove the fat.
Once the surgical portion of upper and/or lower eyelid laser blepharoplasty is complete, Dr. Albert can also use an CO2 laser to resurface and tighten under eye wrinkling. He does this with laser fractional resurfacing. This extends the rejuvenation beyond simply the upper and lower eyelids.
Our Optimization Centre patients love these surgeries for their facial rejuvenation, but they also like that their recovery is not difficult. The laser is known for having less visual recovery since there is less trauma to the tissues.
After your surgery with Dr. Albert, you will return home with a cold compress, opthalmic ointment, and lubricating eye drops. There will be some swelling and bruising, but it is far less with laser blepharoplasty. If you make diligent use of the cold compress, you can really keep any swelling and bruising to a minimum. This procedure involves minimal downtime, often less than one week.
Laser blepharoplasty is a very effective surgery. Because the eyes are the focal point of the face, the rejuvenation gained with laser eyelid surgery is dramatic. It’s thought that eyelid surgery takes about a decade off of the patient’s facial age, plus, these results are subtle. If you haven’t told friends and co-workers you’re going to have this surgery with Dr. Albert, they’ll only know you look somehow more refreshed, rejuvenated, and alert.
Obviously, the aging process will continue, but your eyes will never have the same degree of sagging and loose skin again. You’ll enjoy your younger looking eyes for the rest of your life.
