Gynecomastia

While all men have a small amount of breast tissue, it is usually fairly flat and unnoticeable. Women go on to have complex growth in this area, some obviously more than others, and female breasts are formed. However, it is not normal or desirable for men to have breasts. Gynecomastia is the name given to a male condition that is characterized by the development of excess breast tissue. It is more commonly referred to as ‘man boobs’ and can be a source of serious embarrassment for many males. Adolescents and grown men are often bullied for having breasts. It leads to problems with clothes fitting normally and most not wanting to go to the beach or swim from fear of removing their shirts.

What causes gynecomastia?

In some cases, it is not known exactly why someone may be suffering from gynecomastia. However, most doctors attribute the condition to one of two key causes:

Hormone imbalance

While in general, women tend to be thought of as being hormonal, the truth is that hormones affect men just as much as their female counterparts. While men should have more male hormones and women should have more female hormones, this isn’t always the case and there can be times when the balance is off – such as during puberty and from 40-60. It is not unusual for a boy to develop excess breast tissue during puberty, and while this usually resolves itself once the hormone levels rebalance, yet in about 40% this excess continues into adulthood.

As men get older, their hormones may fluctuate again. This is because the natural production of testosterone slows. Weight gain is common as we get older, and this leads to more estrogen production – the hormone principally responsible for causing breast tissue growth.

Medication side effects

Certain medications may also stimulate breast growth, however, for most people, the side effects that they experience are mild and are outweighed by the benefits of the medcation. Some types of drugs have been shown to cause the development of excess breast tissue, including some extremely common varieties, including those used to treat high blood pressure, heartburn and stomach ulcers.

What is gynecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is a male breast reduction. It is performed under a local or general anesthesia so that you do not experience any pain and are asleep for the duration of the procedure.

A small incision is made around the areola then ultrasonic liposuction or power-assisted liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the breast area. Liposuction involves making small incisions into the breast tissue so that fluid can be injected. This helps to break up the areas of fat so that breast tissue can be sucked out more easily. Through Dr Albert’s extensive experience, he has developed a superior technique that optimizes shape and form and minimizes contour deformities. As well, surgeons that do not perform gynecomastia surgeries often may leave breast tissue behind. In these cases, the excess, residual tissue leads to patients being dissatisfied. When this happens, patients will come to the optimization centre for a revision to remove the rest of the breast tissue that was inadvertently left behind. This is a common problem when the surgeon does not extensive experience in treating gynecomastia. Since Dr Albert removes breast tissue with all of his gynecomastia reduction surgeries, he avoids the possibility of needing a second surgery for recurrence.

In addition to the reducing the breast tissue, Dr. Albert will occasionally inject fat into parts of the chest for optimal contour.

Recovering from gynecomastia surgery

Gynecomastia surgery is often done under local anesthesia. Occasionally, with larger cases or when combine with pectoral implants, general anesthesia is utilized. Dr Albert talks to all of his patients the night of surgery and most do not complain of pain, yet slight discomfort. An undergarment that hides under your clothes is worn for 1-3 weeks.

Gynecomastia surgery allows for one of the quickest recoveries for getting back to exercise. Patients frequently return to those activities within 1-2 weeks from surgery with a typical procedure. If there is a significant amount of saggy skin that requires removal, then this period is slightly longer. Either way, the patient can return to work within 1-3 days.
